Three Season and Four Season Rooms

‘What is the difference between a three season and four season room’ might sound like a very easy question to answer and, for the most part, it is: one room can be used for an additional season. Simple, right? But there is a lot more to consider when you are trying to decide between the two options. Here we will discuss the major differences between three season and four season rooms to help you make the most informed decision with your budget, timeline and expectations in mind.[dt_gap height=”10″ /]

What is the difference?

Three Season RDeckoom

Essentially, it is a screened-window, enclosed room that can be used in the spring, summer and fall. Opening the windows allows beautiful weather to be enjoyed “inside”, while still having the option to close off the room to the outdoors and keep inclement weather outside.[dt_gap height=”10″ /]
Winters in a three season room might be a bit uncomfortable as the space doesn’t have any heating – it is not connected to your HVAC system. And a three season room may be, but is rarely, fully insulated.[dt_gap height=”10″ /]
An existing screened in porch or deck is relatively easy to convert to a three season room, especially if the screen openings are close to the same size as your desired windows. Worst case scenario, a conversion may require some minor re-framing to accommodate windows and increase stability of the structure.[dt_gap height=”10″ /]
PROS:
Less expensive, especially to convert from an existing deck or screened in porch
Generally completed faster than a four season room
Exterior grade material on floor, withstands dirt
Easier to clean (can even be sprayed out with a hose!)[dt_gap height=”10″ /]
CONS:
No heat or air
May not be comfortable to utilize in winter[dt_gap height=”10″ /]
In some instances, you may be able to piggyback on your home’s heating and air by opening windows and doors into the three season room if they are connected to the space. This would greatly increase the comfort of the space and enable you to use the room more comfortably during all seasons, without the cost of building a four season room…

Four Season Room

A four season room, also known as an all-season or year round room, becomes an actual extension of your home. It is insulated and connected to your HVAC system and because of this, a four season room can be used in all seasons.[dt_gap height=”10″ /]
PROS:
Can be considered additional livable square footage, increasing value of your home
Can be used all four seasons
Increases livable space[dt_gap height=”10″ /]
CONS:
More expensive than a three season room
Longer completion time
Needs to be cleaned like an interior space – not a sweep-and-done job![dt_gap height=”10″ /]
